For most people, a good laptop is an essential part of living in an increasingly mobile (and constantly switched-on) world. But it’s not often that we stop and consider what we’re actually doing when using a laptop for its designed purpose; that is, placing a large electronic device that emits heat and radiation directly over your crotch area.
When put bluntly like this it sounds like a radical practice, but this is what many of us actually do with the aptly-named device (and often on a daily basis.) But how much danger does such a ubiquitous object realistically pose? Surely all the warnings about extended laptop usage are just a tempest in a teacup?
Unfortunately this is not the case. As more evidence pours in, it appears that there’s a good reason why you can find stickers on the underside of most new laptops that state:
“Warning. Do not block the outlet of fan grill. Place the machine on hard surface only. Caution: This surface is hot. Avoid body contact and do not place this notebook on your lap while it is operating.”
So let’s drill down into these warnings and discuss how serious the issue really is.
“Toasted Skin Syndrome”
If you do a quick Google image search for terms like ‘laptop heat burn’, you’ll come across some gruesome images (which we won’t republish here) of extremely nasty burn injuries. Whether these are staged photos or genuine injuries caused by a malfunctioning laptop literally catching fire is uncertain, but they’re not representative of the kind of heat damage we’re looking at here.
Instead, excessive laptop usage can cause more of a ‘toasting’ affect, due to which it has earned the medically adopted term ‘toasted skin syndrome’. And while it’s not as dramatic as an all-out burn, it is as unpleasant as it sounds. Akin to prolonged exposure to the sun, the darkened, mottled patch of skin which those afflicted are left with is unsightly. Moreover, it can be (and usually is) permanent.
And like prolonged sun exposure, ‘toasted skin syndrome’ caused by laptop usage can give rise to skin cancer – in particular, squamous cell cancer.
According to a dermatology chief in Chicago, while there have been no confirmed cases so far, the risk is very real and the likelihood of developing this aggressive form of skin cancer is elevated for those who contract toasted skin syndrome.
The dangers of heat-related injury are gradually being better understood and publicized now that laptops have become commonplace. But there’s a more subtle danger that often goes unreported; and while it may be less tangible than external burns, it’s no less serious.
There are three main types of radiation emitted by laptops and their WiFi components, including any nearby routers they’re connected to:
- Electromagnetic field radiation (EMF)
- Electromagnetic radiation (EMR)
- Radiofrequency radiation (RF)
The adverse symptoms of these types of radiation have been covered extensively, particularly when it comes to WiFi. While it is true that these harmful fields surround us virtually all the time, the side effects of exposure are greatly elevated when you’re close to the source of the radiation. Since laptop casing is not adequate to block the radiation emanating from the internal components, it’s no surprise that some experts are advising against putting such an EMF source so close to one’s body.
Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radiation is another concern here; health professionals recommend keeping exposure to ELFs under 3mG (milliGauss) and ideally under 1mG, whereas a standard laptop at contact level emits anywhere between 90mG to 175mG. This is only really a concern when using a laptop over a long period of time, but as any student or gamer will tell you, it’s not uncommon to spend at least a couple of hours glued to the screen.
This all said, we’re fortunate in that it isn’t overly difficult to remedy this situation. Reducing your laptop usage is a preferable, but if that is not an option there are still some easy preventative measures you can take.
Tips to Mitigate the Dangers
- Common sense is paramount here – if you can physically feel the heat emanating from the underside of your laptop, it’s not a good idea to have it on your lap.
- Do clean your air filters with a soft cloth and a can of compressed air from time to time. Not only will this help reduce the temperature it kicks out, but it will also improve its performance and longevity.
- Put something between you and the laptop, preferably some distance and the surface of a desk, since this reduces just about all of the risks that are associated with laptop usage. If you must sit with it on your lap, use a pillow.
- In addition to safeguarding yourself against heat damage, using your laptop on a desk helps cut down on exposure to EMFs. Experts suggest using it at a distance of at least 30cm away, but of course this does move your hands out of direct contact. With this in mind, try to use an external USB keyboard and mouse whenever possible.
- To further help combat the dangers posed by WiFi radiation, consider EarthCalm’s portable Torus in order to maximize protection. This has been independently studied, tested and recommended by the IIREC (Research on Electromagnetic Compatibility) institute.
Closing note: if you’re concerned about the temperature of your laptop, free software is available to monitor exactly how hot it’s running. Under 50° Celsius is optimal, though some modern models can handle up to around 70° and this is normal for high-powered processors. If it’s running at anywhere around 100°, this should be a concern regardless of the model.

It would be hard to deny that the modern world has been improved by an increased access to communication technology. Even in some of the poorest parts of our planet, mobile phones are quickly being seen as a basic commodity rather than a luxury; and everyday, portable access to the Internet has literally undermined and toppled dictatorships (as seen in the Arab Spring over the last couple of years).
For the rest of us, it’s already becoming hard to remember a time in which we didn’t have constant access to information and news, as well as the ability to speak to anyone we want at a moment’s notice.
It would, however, be remiss of us to ignore the heavy price we pay for our global telecommunications network. While bearing in mind the great benefits it brings, let’s take a look at where WiFi and mobile technology is heading over the next ten years, as well as the downsides of being always ‘switched on’.
This leads us neatly on to…
1. Never Being Able to ‘Switch Off’
One of the most apparent aspects of our increasingly-connected world is that it’s somewhat difficult to get away from it all; most of us are familiar with having our quality time or meals out jarringly interrupted by someone staring at a screen, or a lovely view obscured by crowds of people trying to take selfies in front of it.
According to estimates, as of the end of last year there are more connected devices than there are people on the planet. In the US, this equates to 5.7 devices per household on average, with some households owning more than 15.
As a result of always having a device near to hand, it’s not surprising that we’re now spending more time staring at screens and doing work after hours. 67% of cell phone owners check their phone regularly for alerts, even if it didn’t beep or vibrate, and nearly 70% of people sleep with their phone to prevent missing a message or email. All of this cuts into what is traditionally considered ‘quality time’ with those around us, and arguably draws us away from genuine human interaction.
2. Depletion of Finite Resources
Needless to say, everything we produce uses up resources, but some are more finite than others.
The telecommunications industry is far from being the worst offender when it comes to depleting our earth’s resources, but it is not commonly known that the device in your pocket or on your desktop contains trace amounts of incredibly precious materials, often referred to as ‘Rare Earth Elements’.
200 million mobile phones are discarded every year, with their combined circuit boards containing copper (2,000 tonnes), silver (50 tonnes), gold (4 tonnes) and the ultra-rare palladium (2 tonnes). Much of this is not recycled, and the numbers are increasing given that smart phones utilize more Rare Earths than older phones.
And while this is a great concern, we cannot forget the amount of plastic that is consumed in device production. While not as ‘rare’ as palladium, it does use up a resource that we all recognize as valuable – crude oil. Short of using the Poly2Petro process to convert the plastic waste back into oil (which is not, as of yet, widely adopted) there’s little we can do with it other than recycle it a few times before it inevitably makes its way to landfill.
3. Greater Risk of EMFs
With an increase in WiFi and 4G coverage (as well as 5G mobile connectivity scheduled for 2020) comes a higher rate of exposure to microwave background radiations and electromagnetic fields – or EMFs. This has been evidenced by a huge upswing in the number of people suffering from the adverse symptoms of exposure to EMFs, as well as the rapid rise of electromagnetic sensitivity.
We’ve built up a range of information and resources to help combat this via our blog, but ultimately it’s a problem that will only grow as the number of modems and mobile devices inevitably increases. As such, the only thing that can be done is to take preventative measures in order to mitigate the effects of EMFs.
Just as we’re able to enjoy the benefits of always being able to freely share information comes the downside of never knowing who has access to it. This has come to the fore in light of the NSA scandal, but it had been known that organizations such as Google had been scanning personal emails long before this. More recently, Microsoft have come under scrutiny over the Xbox One console featuring an ‘always on’ camera, bringing an uncomfortable level of two-way viewing right into your living room.
Not all claims of intrusion are justified, and there are way more high-profile stories than we can possibly list here, but it has to be noted – especially for those with children – that the price for freedom is eternal vigilance.
In a nutshell, everything has a cost.

Many of us are experiencing an exciting phenomenon known as the Shift currently taking place on the planet.
In this Shift, we see that a new consciousness is birthing itself, creating a “new earth” that many of us have yearned for—one filled with a sense of justice, peace, harmony with the earth, and planetary oneness.
There are many exciting signs of this birth of the “new earth”. People across the planet are waking up and experiencing a new sense of empowerment in creating a world they want to live in. And changes are rapidly happening, whether the mainstream media is focusing on them or not.
If we follow more alternative news sources, it’s easy to see that old, corrupt financial and political structures are collapsing all around us, and new ones are being created. New, affordable green technology is finally taking hold in many countries. And grass roots groups are gathering world-wide to create whole new cultures reflecting innovative and empowering values and ideals.
What a time to be alive!
And yet there’s one thing I wonder about as I reflect on all these exciting things happening: How is the technological revolution going to fit into the world we’re now creating?
Of course, in many ways, it’s this very revolution that has helped bring about the Shift that’s happening in the first place. Both the internet and cell phones have made it possible for ideas to fly around the world in seconds and to bring like-minded people of many different cultures together. The marvels these technological wonders have wrought are truly staggering.
The Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation
But the problem I see is that these wonders have also brought with them a hazard that is impacting the health of more and more people: the ever-increasing fog of electromagnetic radiation we can no longer get away from.
Although the telecom industry continues to maintain its position that the radiation from WiFi and all wireless devices is completely safe for us to use, independent researchers in the last decade have made it abundantly clear that it isn’t safe at all.
Is this Part of the New Earth We’re Creating?
So how does all this fit in with the new earth we’re creating? How can we continue to create and participate in something that is not healthy for us—something that erodes our immune systems, breaks DNA strands, and causes headaches and exhaustion?
How can we ignore the fact that certain of our fellow humans who have electromagnetic sensitivity are actually incapacitated by this radiation? This doesn’t fly with the ideals of creating a safe and peaceful world for all to live and thrive in.
Unfortunately, the technological revolution that has brought about the miraculous ability to be in contact with people all over the world has in great part been created, developed and sold by those still functioning from the old consciousness that tends to value profit over the well-being of people.
Of course, those of us buying and using all this unsafe technology are also responsible. Many of us have not wanted to hear about how unsafe it all is—we’ve become addicted to our cell phones, laptops and other wireless devices. We can’t imagine our lives without them.
When it Hit Home for Me
I fell into a period of great dilemma about this a few years back. Not only because I couldn’t fit this piece about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation into my ideology about the new earth—but because I realized that I was starting to feel the effects of radiation myself.
I became aware that I was feeling ill after using my cell phone for any length of time, and also when I first turned my laptop on. Each time, a headache would immediately begin to bloom. Then I realized there were certain stores that had introduced WiFi into their system I couldn’t stand to stay in anymore—I’d feel nauseous and dizzy and wired in a strange way, till I left.
I didn’t want to admit that electromagnetic radiation was making me sick, because my whole lifestyle and livelihood depended upon the internet and my cell phone. But I finally had to.
What I eventually discovered, much to my relief, was that it was possible to protect myself from the radiation. I spent a lot of time researching and trying a number of EMF protection products I found on the internet. Some of them did something—my headaches were somewhat less frequent. Others, such as those made by EarthCalm, have done wonders.
Until Technology is Safer
What makes me especially pleased is that we don’t have to give up all the benefits of technology as we move forward in creating a new earth. We can use it all—and we can learn to thrive on every level in our lives. We just have to be smart and protect ourselves from the radiation the technology emits.
Maybe at some point, scientists will learn how to create technology that is safer for human beings. But until then, at least we can protect ourselves from it.
If you’re feeling chronically exhausted and you also spend a lot of time on your cell phone, you may want to consider the possibility that these two things are connected.
It may come as a surprise to hear that radiation from cell phones can cause exhaustion—but it’s one of the many symptoms that increasing numbers of people are feeling these days since cell phones have become an essential part of their lives.
It’s not surprising really, when you think of what researchers have found—that wireless radiation impacts the nervous system, keeping it constantly on the alert. It also affects the immune system, breaks DNA strands, causes cells to malfunction, and weakens the blood-brain barrier. Read more.
Why isn’t Everybody Exhausted?
If this is what cell phone radiation does, you may be wondering why everyone who’s addicted to their cell phone isn’t feeling exhausted. The answer is those who aren’t exhausted (or sick in some other way) have immune systems that are strong enough at this point to not be obviously affected.
But it doesn’t mean they will last forever without eventually being impacted. Cell phone radiation is slowly eroding their immune systems. Exhaustion will just show up later for them down the line. People who are feeling exhausted and sick now from cell phone use simply have weaker immune systems.
Other Symptoms Caused by Cell Phone Radiation
Exhaustion is just one of many health symptoms people are experiencing due to the radiation from cell phones. Other common symptoms include:
If this isn’t disturbing enough, scientists have also made correlations between cell phone radiation and a variety of serious diseases, such as brain tumors and other cancers, Alzheimer’s, and Diabetes. Read more.
You Can Protect Yourself against Radiation from Cell Phones!
The good news is you don’t have to be concerned about using your cell phone. You can protect yourself from the radiation with EMF protection.
But don’t settle for an inexpensive device or something without any research behind it—your health is a serious matter. Check out EarthCalm’s solution for protecting you against radiation from cell phones: the Quantum Cell. And read their testimonials.
You can feel greater energy while you’re on the phone—wake up from your exhausted stupor—and rest easy, knowing you’re keeping your immune system healthy.
There’s no getting around it. We are immersed in a sea of WiFi radiation wherever we go these days.
Even if you’re one of the very few today who doesn’t have WiFi in your home, you can’t avoid the electromagnetic pollution caused by WiFi when almost anywhere else outside your home.
But perhaps you’ve dismissed warnings you’ve heard about WiFi radiation dangers, because you’ve also heard that certain “experts” say there really aren’t any.
Research on Electromagnetic Pollution Dangers
Unfortunately, if you dig deeply enough into the research telling you WiFi radiation is not harmful to your health, you’ll find that the “experts” saying this very often are those who have been hired by the corporations producing WiFi.
On the other hand, there is much independent, peer-reviewed research that concludes that WiFi radiation dangers are real. Many diseases have been correlated over and over again with wireless radiation, including various cancers and Alzheimer’s. Furthermore, it has also been correlated with other disorders, such as ADHD, asthma and autism.
Once you learn about this research, it’s hard to ignore the fact that you are being adversely impacted by WiFi radiation.
WiFi Health Risks
Perhaps you’re already experiencing some of the effects of WiFi radiation, without realizing it. They’re wide-ranging. The most common include:
Organizations Cautioning about Radiation Health Risks
There are a number of organizations world-wide that have reviewed the research on radiation health risks and have issued strong cautions about them, including the Council of Europe, the European Environment Agency, the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety, UK Trades Union Congress, and the Russian Commission for Electromagnetic Safety.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Toxicology Program have also studied the effects of non-thermal radiation on human health. Their updated results are that, among other things, radiation can significantly increase the risk of glioma, a deadly brain tumor. They have classified wireless radiation as a possible carcinogen, same as lead and DDT.
WiFi Radiation Dangers in Schools
There are many experts, scientists and doctors who are issuing warnings in particular about the WiFi radiation exposure children are currently experiencing in schools, saying that schools need to take a precautionary approach.
Children’s nervous systems and immune systems are still developing, making them even more vulnerable to WiFi health risks than adults are. Read more.
WiFi Radiation Protection
It’s true you really can’t get away from the electromagnetic pollution caused by WiFi radiation anymore. But fortunately, you can protect yourself from it. Read about available solutions to the problem.
If you’ve been suffering from health symptoms since you had a smart meter attached to your home and others are telling you it’s just your imagination—take heart: there is clear evidence stating that smart meter dangers are real.
Evidence of Smart Meter Dangers
The conclusions of independent research are that safety standards of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are woefully insufficient for guarding people against smart meter radiation levels—and that some installations of smart meters don’t even comply with those inadequate standards.
To begin with, FCC standards, set back in 1996, were based on studies with models of healthy 6’2”, 220 lbs men exposed for short periods of time to wireless radiation.
This, of course, is not even relevant in today’s world, in which women, children and people in poor health are continuously exposed to the radiation from many different sources.
But perhaps most importantly, the FCC only tested for thermal damage—and the health risks independent researchers are finding today are from non-thermal radiation. Also, other sources of radiation (such as Wi-Fi, cell phones, and other wireless devices, all present in today’s homes) were not present in the testing sessions with radiation.
For all these reasons, the report strongly cautions that smart meters are not safe.
Live Blood Tests done on People Near Smart Meters
American Academy of Environmental Medicine
Calls Installation of Smart Meters Irresponsible
Calling for immediate caution regarding smart meter radiation health risks, a letter published by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine cites a number of peer-reviewed, double-blind, placebo-controlled research in humans, and concludes that
“…significant harmful biological effects occur from non-thermal RF exposure, showing causality.”
It further states that the installation is irresponsible and calls not only for a moratorium on installation, but also immediate relief to those requesting it, including the return of analog meters.
Wireless Radiation Correlated with Diseases
An article in the scientific journal Pathophysiology in 2007 by C. Sage and D. Carpenter outlines in detail the reasons for concern about wireless radiation. They cite studies linking non-thermal radiation to:
They conclude that:
“The rapidly expanding development of new wireless technologies and the long latency for the development of such serious diseases as brain cancers means that failure to take immediate action to reduce risks may result in an epidemic of potentially fatal diseases in the future.”
Early Smart Meter Health Symptoms
Common symptoms after the installation of a smart meter are:
Certain groups of people are especially vulnerable to smart meter radiation dangers: children (who absorb radiation at a greater rate than adults), people with electromagnetic sensitivity, people wearing pacemakers, and chronically or acutely ill people whose immune systems are compromised.
Protection against Smart Meters Dangers
There are no warnings about health dangers that come with the installation of a smart meter. In some areas, it’s now possible to opt out—usually for a monthly fee. But you may not wish to pay this fee. Or you may be faced with living near a whole bank of smart meters on your building or next door, so opting out won’t do you much good.
What makes sense is to simply get EMF protection. Check out EarthCalm’s solution for protecting yourself against smart meter dangers.
Power lines are ugly—no two ways about it. They mar the landscape and evoke fear of electrocution if you get too close to them.
But if you’re actually living by power lines, they seem even uglier. Who wants to look out their window and see the giant metal atrocities stretching across the horizon?
Power Lines and Your Health
But perhaps more important than how unsightly powerlines can be, is how dangerous to your health they are when you’re living close to them. Power lines emit high levels of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which interfere with cell functioning, break DNA strands, and erode the immune system.
For long-time residents living near power lines, this can mean eventually facing serious diseases. Although there are a few studies claiming there is no evidence of a link between powerlines and diseases, there are hundreds of international studies that do link cancers and other diseases and disorders to living near power lines.
Research on Living by Power Lines
Childhood Leukemia has been widely studied in correlation with power lines. In 1979, a ground-breaking study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology by Wertheimer and Leeper of the University of Colorado Medical Center reported a direct link between electromagnetic field exposure from power lines and childhood leukemia.
Studying the relationship between the incidences of leukemia in children and living by power lines at various distances, they found that there was a higher incidence of leukemia in children who lived closest to power lines. The findings made headlines in medical literature and spawned dozens of further studies over the years seeking to replicate the results.
A significant example is a study published by Gerald Draper, et al in 2005 in the British Medical Journal finding that children who lived within 200 meters of a high voltage power line at birth were 70% more likely to develop childhood leukemia than those living more than 600 meters away.
Two further studies were published in 2010 correlating childhood leukemia with living by high voltage powerlines: The first involved 600 children and emphasized that “living close to high voltage power lines is a risk for ALL.” The second was a pooled analysis of seven studies with a total of 10,865 cases and 12,853 controls with similar conclusions.
Lymphatic and Bone Marrow Cancers
In 2007, R.M. Lowenthal in Australia, conducted a research study with 850 people who lived near power lines and established a link between them and adult onset of lymphatic and bone marrow cancers.
Researchers compared records of all patients diagnosed with these cancers between 1972 and 1980, with controls for sex and age. Results showed that the risk of developing cancer increased by 106% for people who lived within 50 meters of a power line, as compared to those who lived 300 meters away.
And those who lived within 300 meters of a power line up to age five were five times more likely to develop cancer, while those who lived that close to a power line at any point during their first 15 years were three times more likely to develop cancer as an adult.
Heading a team at Kaiser Permanente’s research division in Oakland, CA, De-Kun Li conducted an epidemiological study in 2001 which found an up to six-fold increased risk of miscarriage among women living by power lines. Later, in 2002, Newsgroup Newspapers reported on a study in which it was found that 1 woman in 7 living within 25 meters of a powerline experienced miscarriage; whereas, those living further than 25 meters only suffered 1 in 29.
Alzheimer’s Disease and Senile Dementia
A study conducted by Anke Huss, et al in 2008 correlated power lines and the risk of death due to neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers found there was a dose-response relation between living by power lines and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia.
Another study by M. Fechting, et al supported the hypothesis that EMF exposure increases the risk of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and suggests that magnetic field exposure may represent a late-acting influence in the disease process.
Depression, Anxiety and Sleep Disorders
In 1988, the Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Washington published a study that found that exposure to power lines disrupted circadian rhythm cycles and altered serotonin and melatonin neurotransmitter levels—all of which cause sleep disorders and difficulty in regulating moods, such as depression and anxiety.
Early Symptoms of Living Near Power Lines
It’s not necessary to wait till someone in your family is diagnosed with one of these diseases to see if you’ve been affected by powerlines near your home. There are symptoms that people often feel earlier on, such as:
Moving isn’t the Only Solution
If you’ve been experiencing symptoms since you’ve lived near power lines, you might consider your exposure to the power lines as a possible cause—or at least a contributing one. But don’t panic—moving isn’t the only solution.
You can also simply get EMF protection. A highly effective solution is to install the EarthCalm Home EMF Protection System, which will protect everyone throughout your entire home.
If living by power lines is unavoidable, get protection now and be safe.
For over a hundred years, it has been assumed that the higher incidence of diseases in urban areas since the beginning of the 20th century was related to either lifestyle, chemical pollutants or genetics.
Now in his autobiography, Dirty Electricity: Electrification and the Diseases of Civilization, epidemiologist Samuel Milham describes a very different probable culprit: electromagnetic fields (EMFs)—and in particular, dirty electricity.
In a highly convincing manner, Milham points out that major diseases plaguing modern man, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and suicide, may be triggered by this prevalent, yet nearly entirely overlooked, cause.
What is Dirty Electricity?
Dirty electricity is a type of electrosmog referring to the use of voltage shifts in many energy-efficient electronic devices, such as dimmer switches, computers, and fluorescent lights.
These types of devices shift the voltage in the AC wiring in the home, creating high frequency spikes in the electricity.
Link Between Occupational Exposure to EMFs and Cancer
Milham’s autobiography tells his story as the scientist who first alerted the world to the link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and human disease. He takes readers through his early years and education, following the path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century “diseases of civilization” are caused by electromagnetic field exposure.
In a long and productive career, Milham tracked the association between EMFs and different kinds of occupational cancer, including leukemia, brain cancer and breast cancer. In this book, he specifically focuses in on dirty electricity, which he believes is causing an epidemic of many different diseases, as well as cancer.
21st Century Epidemic
Milham states that with the current explosion of the wireless revolution, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality:
“The explosive recent increase in radio-frequency radiation and high frequency transients sources from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-Max telecommunication systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment may be leading to a new 21st Century epidemic much like the 20th Century electromagnetic field epidemic.”
Linking Dirty Electricity to Specific Diseases
Milham’s research suggests that most cancer in firefighters is due not to exposure to inhaled carcinogens as has been presumed, but to their exposure to EMFs and radiofrequency radiation resulting from use of mobile two-way radio communications devices.
He also suggests that patients with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) may develop it through exposure to electromagnetic fields applied to or induced in the body, such as from medical electromagnetic stimulation, often used by athletes.
Milham also looks at an increased incidence of cancer among teachers at a school in California with dirty electricity in the school environment and makes a link between the two. In a study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, it’s shown that the risk of cancer associated with electrical exposures at the school was 64 percent and that a single year of employment at the school increased a teacher’s cancer risk by 21 percent.
No Electricity, Less Disease
Interestingly, Milham’s research also makes sense of the fact that the Amish, a group of people who don’t use electricity, have lower rates of diabetes, heart disease, suicide and cancer than those who do.
They also have surprisingly low levels of neurodegenerative disease—and not one case of ADHD on record.
Will Anyone Listen?
Milham has published papers with original and provocative ideas in the world’s most prestigious journals for fifty years, including Lancet, Science, Nature and the American Journal of Epidemiology. Some of the papers have had a major impact on other scientists in the field and have opened new avenues of research.
Unfortunately, however, he has seen them fall by the wayside time and time again. Like others in the field, such as Ross Adey, Robert Becker, Abe Liboff and Nancy Wertheimer, his efforts have been stymied by those in power with an interest in keeping things as they are.
Read more on dirty electricity and what you can do about it.
Headaches. Seems like everyone gets them these days. They’re so common, we barely notice when one hits us.
We may think, Oh, too much/too little coffee…or too much/too little sleep…or hangover…or stress…or whatever. It’s to be expected in today’s world. Headaches are a part of life.
And we simply take our headache pain medication of choice, and it disappears—at least for a while. Or maybe we decide we need to go to yoga more often or meditate more. Cut down on the stress in our life. And of course, these can all help.
Chronic Daily Headaches
But what if your headache continues to be chronic, no matter what you do or change in your life? You get it every day and it never really disappears, even with pain pills? That’s when you start getting worried.
Maybe you start fantasizing in your worst moments about possibly having a brain tumor or some other deadly disease. You think you’d better go see a doctor, but then realize you’re afraid to. So you stuff your worry down and carry on with your headache-ridden life in denial.
But the headaches don’t go away.
Maybe it’s your Cell Phone
It might be simpler to solve your headache problem than you think. Many people these days are getting chronic headaches simply due to the fact that they’re exposing their heads daily to cell phone radiation.
This isn’t just speculation or fear-mongering. You’ve probably read that it’s never been “proven” that cell phone radiation is dangerous, so maybe you haven’t given it a thought. But if you look closely, you’ll see that a lot of the studies that have come to that conclusion have been funded, at least in part, by the telecom industry. Is their conclusion any surprise?
Meanwhile, there’s a huge number of independent studies that have very clearly drawn the correlation between cell phone radiation and a number of symptoms and diseases. Brain tumors are probably the most studied, but other kinds of tumors have been correlated with cell phones also.
You probably don’t have a brain tumor; but if you have chronic daily headaches and you use your cell phone at least a couple of hours a day, it’s likely they’re connected.
And your chronic headache may simply be the warning bell to stop doing what you’re doing, before things get worse.
How Can You Live Without Your Cell Phone?
You may protest that you can’t possibly live without your cell phone. This may or may not be true. You might be able to, but who wants to live with that inconvenience? The point is it’s not necessary. You can keep your phone.
You just need to attach cell phone radiation protection to it. EarthCalm’s answer to cell phone radiation dangers is the Quantum Cell. Backed by research and the company’s 25-year track record, the Quantum Cell has solved many people’s chronic daily headache problems. They’re able to use their phones as much as they want and stay headache-free.
Don’t take chances with your brain! And free yourself from the on-going ache in your head. EarthCalm gives you a 90-day, money-back guarantee on all products. Try the Quantum Cell today and see what happens to your chronic headaches.
A new study has been released correlating cancer deaths with cell tower radiation.
Researchers headed by Adilza Condessa Dode, Ph.D. of the Minas Methodist University Center in Brazil found that more cancer deaths occurred in the areas closest to the base station clusters in the Belo Horizonte municipality in Brazil from 1996 to 2006 than in areas further away.
Analyzing the numbers from three different databases, the researchers found that 856 cell towers had been installed during the time period studied; and in that time, 7,191 cancer deaths had occurred within an area of 500 meters from the towers.
Incidence of cancer in areas beyond that distance decreased proportionately during the same time period. In the region where a larger number of towers had been erected, the incidence amounted to 5.83 per 1,000 people; whereas in the region where there were fewer cell towers, a much lower incidence occurred: about 2.05 per 1,000.
Over 80 percent of those who died from cancer resided approximately a third of a mile away from one of the hundreds of cell towers in the city. These cancers, mostly found in the prostate, lungs, kidneys, breasts and liver are the ones associated with electromagnetic radiation exposure.
Not an Isolated Study
Many research studies in a number of different countries over the last decade have also linked cancer to living near cell towers.
One notable study performed in 2004 headed by Horst Eger involved 1,000 patients and showed that the proportion of cancer cases was three times higher among those people who had lived within 400 meters of a cell tower during the past 10 years.
In another study conducted by Dr. Siegal Sadetzki of Tel Aviv University in 2010 examined 622 people living within 350 meters of a cell tower during a period of 3-7 years. The results showed that there were over four times as many cancer patients from the area near the cell tower compared to a group living further away from the tower.
In 2007, British researcher, Dr. John Walker compiled a series of cluster studies on the effects of cell tower radiation. Studies showed high incidences not only of cancer, but also brain hemorrhages and high blood pressure within a radius of 400 yards of mobile phone towers.
Other Health Effects Linked to Cell Tower Radiation
Numerous other health symptoms have been correlated to exposure to cell tower radiation in studies done by R. Santini in France and E.A. Navarro in Spain, such as:
- Sleep disturbances
- Difficulty concentrating, memory loss
- Depression, irritability
- Cardiovascular disorders
The Evidence Grows
An increasing number of studies and organizations support the conclusions of the Brazilian study. The International Association for Research on Cancer (IARC), based upon findings from research conducted by an international groups of scientists, concluded that electromagnetic radiation is a possible carcinogen. Other independent scientists have also put out an unequivocal health warning against all man-made electromagnetic radiation exposure, including those radiating from cell towers.
Researchers at Tel Aviv University have recently found indicators of a major risk for cancer in the saliva of people who were heavy cell phone users.
For over two decades, scientists have been concerned about the health effects of cell phone radiation. Much research has shown a correlation between cell phone usage and a number of different symptoms and diseases, including cancer.
A new study by Dr. Yaniv Hamzany et al of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine has now found more evidence of this link.
Because people generally place their cell phones close to their salivary glands when using them, the scientists decided to examine the saliva of cell phone users to determine if there were any clues in the saliva about cell phone radiation effects.
They studied subjects who used their mobile phones for at least eight hours a month (even though most cell phone users use their cell phones much longer—up to 30-40 hours a month, according to some studies). Their saliva was compared to that of people who didn’t use cell phones at all or only used texting.
Higher Oxidative Stress
In comparing heavy cell phone users to non-users, they found that the saliva of heavy users showed indications of higher oxidative stress, a process that produces free radicals and damages all aspects of a human cell, including DNA. Oxidative Stress indicates an important cancer risk factor.
“This suggests that there is considerable oxidative stress on the tissue and glands which are close to the cell phone when in use,” Dr. Hamzany stated. “The damage caused by oxidative stress is linked to cellular and genetic mutations which cause the development of tumors.”
This area of research reflects serious concerns certain researchers have had about the impact of cell phone use—in particular, the effects of radiofrequency non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation on human tissue located close to the ear.
Other Relevant Cancer-Cell Phone Studies
A study by the Israeli Weitzmann Institute of Science found cell phone usage increased the risk of tumors in the salivary glands by 50%. The risk was even greater if the user always used the same ear, didn’t use a hands-free device, or used the phone where reception was poor. The researchers found that a call lasting just 10 minutes can create changes in brain cells that are associated with cancer.
Another study by an Israeli research group found that there’s recently been a sharp 4-fold increase in malignant tumors of the parotid gland on the side of the face the cell phone users generally hold the phone. Parotid tumors have historically been very rare and have shown up in people after the age of 50. Most cases since 2001 have occurred in people under the age of 20.
Dozens of studies have also correlated cell phone radiation with brain cancer. See a report by independent researchers for more information.
Anyone watching the news these days is aware there’s currently great concern in certain groups about the health dangers of wireless radiation generated by cell phones, WiFi, Smart Meters, and all other wireless devices.
Perhaps you’ve ignored these types of concerns, relying on the fact that there is still controversy among scientists studying the health effects of wireless radiation—that there is no solid consensus among them that wireless radiation is harmful.
This is understandable. It would be nice if the subject could be resolved, once and for all, with a tidy answer to the question that everyone agreed on. Unfortunately, the issue may not be resolved in the near future, for several reasons.
First, many of the studies claiming there’s no harm are funded, at least partially, by the telecom industry. The scientists are being paid largely by corporations. Connect the dots, and you see that it makes sense that there are studies out there claiming no correlation at all between wireless radiation and health symptoms and disease.
Secondly, if you look into some of the studies showing there is little harm in cell phone radiation (e.g., the Interphone Study), you’ll see that they have major flaws in them.
And finally, it’s important to remember issues like tobacco, asbestos, and lead paint–and to recall how long it took to really get the information out there that these substances are correlated directly to cancer and other diseases. Some say that the telecom lobby is even more powerful in Washington today than the pharmaceutical lobby (and that’s saying a lot).
It’s important to be aware of an ever-growing mountain of evidence given in peer-reviewed, independent studies that wireless radiation has been correlated over and over again with a wide variety of health symptoms and diseases, world-wide. Read the latest, most comprehensive report published in 2012.
More and more people are reporting symptoms when using their cell phones, laptops and other wireless devices. Some are getting sick just from electrical appliances in their homes. As time goes on, more and more health professionals are becoming aware of what these symptoms are—and are aware of the diseased they can lead to. Common symptoms are:
- Dizziness, disorientation
- Digestive disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Trouble concentrating
- Memory problems
The good news is that these symptoms and diseases they lead to can be avoided. You simply need EMF protection. EarthCalm has been providing top of the line EMF protection with researched technology for 25 years.
There’s no need to take chances with your health. And there’s no need to give up your cell phone or other devices that emit wireless radiation. Simply get protection!
I know, I know. Who wants to hear about the dangers of something we all know we can’t live without. Who would’ve thought that using something so absolutely ingenious and practical—and well, so necessary—could end up being bad for our health?
Cell Phone Studies Don’t all Agree
Surely all those studies showing harmful health effects of cell phone radiation must be wrong—not all of the studies show it’s bad for us, right? Some of them say there’s nothing to be worried about. There’s no conclusive “proof” that cell phone radiation is harmful to us.
That’s right. There are some that do say this. But have you checked into most of them? If you follow the money, you’ll find out that the telecom industry has funded a good number of them. Surprise, surprise.
And then, if you really research many of these studies, you can also find that independent scientists have discovered significant flaws in the methodology used, rendering their conclusions, at best, unreliable.
Then, of course, there’s the mountain of scientific research out there concluding that cell phone radiation is harmful to us, correlating it with dozens of health symptoms and very serious diseases. Even if there were just a few studies showing these correlations, shouldn’t that give us pause? Why take chances with brain cancer?
The Government Would be Doing Something, Right?
Well, you might say—wouldn’t the government have done something about it by this time, if the radiation really was harmful? Hmmm…remember tobacco? What about asbestos? How long did it take for the government to act on those harmful substances?
I’ve read that the telecom industry lobby in Washington is now even larger than the pharmaceutical lobby. Enough said.
But the FCC says Cell Phones are Safe
But the FCC, you might persist, tested them and said the radiation level was safe. Yep, it did. Back in 1996, that is—long before present-day cell phones even existed. And before millions of people, including children, began using them for hours a day on a daily basis.
Also, the testing model the FCC used was based on 6’2” men, weighing 220 lbs. Not exactly our average person using cell phones today, is it?
And besides, the only kind of testing the FCC did was on thermal effects of cell phone radiation. And all the scientists warning of cell phone dangers are talking about non-thermal effects.
Was this testing even relevant to today’s reality of cell phone use?
To give the government credit, it’s true that finally, finally, the whole question of cell phone safety is up before Congress. Part of the bill provides that the FCC retest the health effects of cell phone radiation.
But we all know how long that might take. Meanwhile, we have our cell phones. And we need (well, I guess it’s actually that we want) to use them. So what can we do?
Cell Phone Radiation Protection
It’s actually very easy. We just need to get cell phone radiation protection for our phones. Check out the EarthCalm Quantum Cell—-the most powerful and reliable protection on the market for your cell phone. You can relax, knowing you’re protected.
Let’s face it: It’s no time for denial: there’s a very good probability that cell phone radiation is dangerous. But there’s an easy fix, so why take chances?
Still wondering whether your Smart Meter is safe or not? Maybe you’re thinking all the fuss certain people are making about smart meter radiation is based on misinformation and emotionally-charged beliefs, and that their symptoms are all in their heads.
Well, there have been heated emotional arguments on both sides of this issue, many based on too little information. What we can’t argue with, however, is science—independent scientific research and reports—and there is much available to us now, telling us about the dangers of Smart Meters.
Independent Research on Smart Meter Radiation
For example, take the report an independent research team recently publishe that bases its conclusions on clear evidence of Smart Meter dangers.
The conclusions of the research team include the fact that Smart Meters often may not even comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) safety standards. And these standards in themselves are insufficient for measuring smart meter radiation levels.
The report also outlines how FCC standards, set back in 1996, were based on studies with healthy 6’2”, 220 lbs men exposed for short periods of time—very different from the situation with Smart Meters, in which women, children and people in fragile health are continuously exposed to the radiation, often from more than one smart meter.
Furthermore, the regulations only tested for thermal damage—and the health risks researchers are finding are from non-thermal effects. Also, other sources of radiation (such as Wi-Fi, cell phones, and other wireless devices, all present in today’s homes) were not present in the testing. For all these reasons, the report strongly cautions that smart meters are not safe.
Santa Cruz County Health Department Report
In January 2012, the Public Health Officer and County Counsel of the County of Santa Cruz wrote a report to the Board of Supervisors, outlining their analysis of health effects of Smart Meter radiation. The lengthy, detailed letter included numerous citations of evidence of health dangers from Smart Meters.
It recommends that
…it is in the best interest of public health, safety, and welfare…to adopt the…ordinance implementing a temporary moratorium on the installation of SmartMeters in or on any home, apartment, condominium or business within the the unincorporated area of the County.
UC Nuclear Policy Lecturer Dan Hirsch Report on Smart Meter Dangers
Yet another report regarding the hazards of smart meters was published by Daniel Hirsch, PhD, commenting on the Draft Report called “Heath Impacts of Radio Frequency from Smart Meters” written by the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST).
Hirsch points out that the report by the CCST doesn’t appear to answer the questions asked of it by the requesting elected officials. Also, rather than being an independent study, the CCST basically cut and pasted estimates from a brochure by the Electric Power Research Institute, an industry group—and that furthermore, those estimates were inaccurate. Indeed, he states that
The cumulative whole body exposure from a Smart Meter at 3 feet appears to be approximately two orders of magnitude higher than that of a cell phone, rather than two orders of magnitude lower.
American Academy of Environmental Medicine Recommends Avoiding Smart Meters
Calling for immediate caution regarding Smart Meter installations due to radiation health risks, a letter published by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine cites a number of peer-reviewed, double-blinded, placebo-controlled research in humans, and concludes that
“…significant harmful biological effects occur from non-thermal RF exposure, showing causality.”
It further states its opinion that the installation is irresponsible and calls not only for a moratorium on installation, but also immediate relief to those requesting it, including the return of analog meters.
The literature cited in the letter raises serious concerns about the levels of RF and ELF exposures emitted by Smart Meters. The board also states that the existing FCC guidelines for RF safety that have been used to justify installation of Smart Meters only look at thermal damage and are obsolete since many up-to-date studies show metabolic & genetic damage from RF & ELF below the level of intensity which heats tissues.
Other Studies on the Effects of Wireless Radiation
A comprehensive report published by 29 independent scientists, researchers, and health policy professionals from 10 different countries, the Bioinitiative Report documents clear evidence that numerous health issues are created by exposure to radiation from wireless devices.
An article in the scientific journal Pathophysiology in 2007 by C. Sage and D. Carpenter outlines in detail the reasons for concern about wireless radiation. They cite studies linking non-thermal radiation to
- Brain tumors
- Alzeimer’s and ALS
- Breast cancer
- DNA damage, breakage of blood-brain barrier
- Altered immune function
- Memory and learning deficits
They conclude that
The rapidly expanding development of new wireless technologies and the long latency for the development of such serious diseases as brain cancers means that failure to take immediate action to reduce risks may result in an epidemic of potentially fatal diseases in the future.
So, are Smart Meters Dangerous?
How much more evidence do we need? Certainly there is enough at this point to warrant great concern. We need to see that people claiming to have health symptoms since the installation of their Smart Meters are actually the “canaries in the mine”. Symptoms in healthier and less sensitive individuals will probably simply take longer to appear.
At the same time, if you are concerned, there is the option of simply getting Smart Meter radiation protection, and the whole matter of smart meter dangers can be dropped. The controversy will likely go on for some time—as will the controversy about the dangers of cell phone radiation. But with the probable dangers of both, why wait to see who is eventually proven “right”?
Whether living near power lines is dangerous or not is still a debatable question. There appears to be conflicting evidence about the issue.
Like with all questions about electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and wireless radiation, you can find experts making adamant claims on both sides of the question.
But the important thing is that there exists plentiful evidence that does clearly correlate EMF exposure with numerous symptoms and serious diseases—and exposure from living near power lines is no exception. Many independent, peer-reviewed studies have linked power lines with several different diseases, including cancer.
Research on Living near Power Lines
In 2007, R.M. Lowenthal in Hobart, Australia, conducted a research study published in the “Internal Medicine Journal” focusing on the incidence of cancer and exposure to high power lines. The study established a link between its survey group of 850 Australians and adult onset of lymphatic and bone marrow cancers. Results showed that the risk of developing cancer increased by 106% for people who lived within 50 meters of a power line, as compared to those who lived 300 meters away.
Childhood Leukemia has been even more thoroughly studied in regard to power lines. In 1979, a study published in the “American Journal of Epidemiology” by Wertheimer and Leeper of the University of Colorado Medical Center reported a direct link between living by power lines and childhood leukemia.
Examining the relationship between the incidence of leukemia in children and living near power lines at various distances, they found that there was a higher incidence of leukemia in children who lived closest to power lines. The findings made headlines and spawned dozens of further studies over the years seeking to replicate the results.
For example, in 2005, the British Medical Journal published a study conducted by Dr. Gerald Draper, et al, which found that children who lived within 200 meters of a high voltage power line at birth were 70% more likely to develop childhood leukemia than those living more than 600 meters away.
Two more studies were published in 2010 linking childhood leukemia with living near high voltage power lines: The first involved 600 children and emphasized that “living close to high voltage power lines is a risk for ALL.” The second was a pooled analysis of seven studies with a total of 10,865 cases and 12,853 controls with similar conclusions.
Alzheimer’s Disease and Senile Dementia
A study in 2008, conducted by Dr. Anke Huss, et al correlated power lines and the risk of death due to neurodegenerative diseases. It was found that there was a dose-response relation between living by power lines and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and also senile dementia.
Another study by M. Fechting, et al supported the hypothesis that EMF exposure increases the risk of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and suggests that magnetic field exposure may represent a late-acting influence in the disease process.
In 2001, Dr. De-Kun Li, leading a team at Kaiser Permanente’s research division in Oakland, CA conducted an epidemiological study which found an up to six-fold increased risk of miscarriage among women living by power lines. Later, in 2002, Newsgroup Newspapers reported on a study in which it was found that 1 woman in 7 living within 25 meters of a power line suffered from miscarriage; whereas, those living further than 25 meters only suffered 1 in 29.
Depression, Anxiety and Sleep Disorders
The Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Washington published a study in 1988 that found that EMFs from power lines disrupted circadian rhythm cycles and altered serotonin and melatonin neurotransmitter levels—all of which cause sleep disorders and difficulty in regulating emotions, such as depression and anxiety.
So do you have to wait till someone in your family is diagnosed with one of these diseases to see if you’ve been affected by power lines near your home? No, there are symptoms that people often feel earlier on, such as:
- sleep disorders
- digestive disorders
If someone in your family has been experiencing symptoms since you’ve lived near power lines, you might want to consider the lines as a possible cause—or at least a contributing one.
It’s Not Necessary to Move
The good news is it’s not necessary to move. You can get EMF protection and prevent symptoms and diseases caused by living near power lines. The EarthCalm Home EMF Protection System will protect your whole family throughout your entire home.
Are Cordless Phones any Safer than Cell Phones?
If you think you’re avoiding the dangers of cell phone radiation by using your cordless phone—you may want to think again. According to research, cordless phones are just as dangerous, if not more so, than cell phones.
Dangers of Cordless Phone Radiation
A few years back, cordless phones were mainly analog type phones. Those weren’t much to worry about.
But most cordless phones sold these days are DECT phones (Digital Electronic Cordless Telephones). And these phones broadcast microwave radiation 24 hours/day at an extremely high power. They send a sharp rise of continuous electromagnetic energy broadcasting throughout your home, even when your phone is not in use.
Cell Phones vs Cordless Phones
Unlike cell phones, DECT cordless phones work at a fixed power. Cell phones turn their power down to the lowest level possible when near a cell tower. But DECT phones continue to generate a high level of radiation constantly no matter where a cell tower may be, so their pulses are far more aggressive than those of mobiles.
In addition, cordless phones can be more dangerous than cell phones because of the frequency of the pulse. DECT pulses at 100 Hz, while a mobile phone generally pulses at 217Hz—and the lower the pulsing frequency, the stronger the biological dangers.
Sleep Problems due to Cordless Phone Radiation
One of the most important health effects that’s caused by having a cordless phone in your home—especially in your bedroom near your bed—is sleep disturbance and insomnia. The pulse of a DECT phone is in the high alpha range of brain waves. This forces your brain waves to “entrain” to or match that pattern.
This is disturbing enough during the day, when your brain does its best work when you’re wide awake, in beta. But trying to get deep sleep while in the high alpha range is next to impossible. To get truly restorative sleep, your brain needs to access the slow delta range. This is the range in which your body heals and detoxifies itself.
Other Health Effects
Not only do the pulsed waves of a DECT phone prevent you from getting restorative deep sleep, they also disturb many other body rhythms, such as:
- Heart rate variability
- breathing patterns
- bowel movements
- 24-hour meridian activity
The DECT pulsed waves also block the blood-brain barrier, allowing circulating toxins to enter into your brain. In addition, they affect endothelial cells in the gut mucosa, disrupting the gut barrier. This, in turn, can cause leaky gut syndrome, leading to food and environmental allergies.
Research on Cordless Phone Radiation
Recently a report by independent researchers was released documenting, among other things, that cordless phones are just as dangerous as cell phones when it comes to brain tumors and acoustic neuromas.
An important research team led by Professor Kjell Mild, a Swedish biophysicist, has produced a number of leading papers on cell phone health effects. An early study linked brain tumors to the use of analogue mobile phones. Newer research repeated the test and also looked at digital mobiles and DECT cordless phones. The results showed that all three types of phones were linked to increased tumor rates.
The extra tumors only start to show up after about five years’ use, but there is increasing dose-related-response with minutes of use per month and number of years of use. Mild discussed the results of his studies at an international conference chaired by Alasdair Philips of Powerwatch.
German Medical Doctors are Concerned
Over 1000 medical doctors in Germany have endorsed the Freiburger Appeal, which indicates that people’s exposure to electromagnetic fields (mainly mobile/DECT) is triggering widespread illness.
Out of great concern for the health of our fellow human beings do we—as established physicians of all fields, especially that of environmental medicine—turn to the medical establishment and those in public health and political domains, as well as to the public. We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:
- Learning, concentration, and behavioural disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder)
- Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications
- Heart rhythm disorders
- Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
- Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and epilepsy
- Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors
Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:
- Headaches, migraines
- Chronic exhaustion
- Inner agitation
- Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
- Susceptibility to infection
- Nervous and connective tissue pains
Since the living environment and lifestyles of our patients are familiar to us, we can see—especially after carefully-directed inquiry—a clear temporal and spatial correlation between the appearance of disease and exposure to pulsed high-frequency microwave radiation (HFMR), such as:
- Installation of a mobile telephone sending station in the near vicinity
- Intensive mobile telephone use
- Installation of a digital cordless (DECT) telephone at home or in the neighbourhood
Cordless Phone Radiation Protection
So what are we to do now—not only have serious health effects been correlated with cell phone radiation, but also with cordless phone radiation as well. Of course, we can go back to wired phones—but who in today’s world can realistically do that?
The other option, fortunately, is really easy: get radiation protection for your cordless phone (and also your cell phone, while you’re at it). EarthCalm has provided EMF protection from all sources of electromagnetic fields, including phones, for many years.
One Quantum Cell will protect you from all handsets of your cordless phone; you simply stick it on the base station, and all phones are protected. Check EarthCalm’s research done on the Quantum Cell and protect yourself today!
At long last, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has decided to review the health effects of radiation from cell phones and other wireless devices to see if it needs to modify its standards for safety. On March 27, 2013, it opened an inquiry into this issue.
For the first time since 1996 when the agency first adopted its RF standards, the FCC will be consulting with relevant agencies and health experts about this issue. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski circulated a notice of inquiry last June that posed a series of questions as to whether the current standards need to be updated or whether the agency’s testing practices should be altered. It took nine months for the notice of inquiry to become an official part of the FCC docket.
Current FCC Standards
Many experts believe that the current standards have needed to be updated for a long time. Indeed, the FCC standards for cell phone radiation are more than out-dated; they were never really adequate to begin with, for the following reasons:
1. The kind of radiation they tested was the thermal radiation of cell phones. The researchers who are concerned today about health effects of radiation are those who have been testing the effects of non-thermal radiation of cell phones.
2. The FCC based its standards on studies that utilized a simulated model of a healthy man who was 6’2” and weighed 220 lbs. This certainly is not the average person today using a cell phone, when we consider all the women, children and men who have smaller heads—and those who may have a weakened immune system.
3. The exposure time tested was extremely short. This too is not representative of what is happening today, when people stay on the phone sometimes for hours at a time.
4. Cell phones in 1996 were not the digital models that are used today.
5. The tests done back in 1996 did not take into account the presence of any other microwave radiation in the environment. Today, aside from the radiation coming from a person’s cell phone, there is also radiation from all the other wireless technology in the environment, along with that from the hundreds of cell towers and WiFi that now completely surrounds us. The effect of all this radiation on a body is cumulative and continues to stress the body in an ongoing way.
Environmental Activists Pleased but Worried
Certain groups of environmental activists, scientists and health professionals have called on the FCC for years to update its RF emission standards, saying they don’t adequately protect users of wireless devices, especially children and pregnant women.
Many of these critics also contend that plenty of research has shown a connection between mobile phone use and brain tumors and other ill health effects. See a review of studies on cell phones and cancer.
Although pleased that the FCC is finally taking some action on the issue, some critics question whether the Commission is even qualified to undertake the task of deciding whether its standards need to be revised, given its lack of knowledge in public health matters. We can only hope.
It’s so convenient isn’t it? Just tuck your cell phone into your bra—and you’re hands free. You know exactly where your phone is. And if you’re out running or playing tennis without a purse, there’s no problem reaching you!
Special Cell Phone Bras
And now it’s even easier: There are bras you can buy with special pockets designed to fit your cell phone. One product was developed by two college students for their school’s business plan competition: the JoeyBra.
There are other models out there, as well, including a sports halter with a pocket across the front. So clever and convenient!
But Not So Smart
Unfortunately, women’s breasts (especially those of younger women) are even more susceptible to cell phone radiation than other parts of the body. And there are women finding this out the hard way, by discovering that breast cancer has developed in their breasts exactly where they’ve been keeping their phones—nestled in their cleavage.
Cell Phone Radiation Dangers
Most doctors and surgeons still aren’t making the connection between breast cancer and cell phone radiation. But two women have recently brought this connection to the attention of medical professionals. Both women were diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have mastectomies.
At the age of 39, Donna Jayes was diagnosed with breast cancer. Doctors found there were no genetic predispositions or other risk factors and were puzzled—especially as Donna is Asian, and breast cancer is typically less common in women of Asian heritage. Also breast cancer generally happens in women in their 50s and 60s.
But after studying Donna’s situation more closely, two cancer specialists, Robert Nagourney and John West, finally ascertained that Donna had had the habit for about 10 years of tucking her phone into her bra. They concluded that this had likely caused her breast cancer.
“We connected the dots”, Donna said. And the dots were quite literally the pattern of the cancer and distribution of the cancerous cells: they lined up perfectly with the shape of her cell phone where she had kept it.
Tiffany Franz, at the age 21, is another woman who had her breast removed. She had tucked her cell phone in her bra for only 6 years, in just the same way.
Phone-Related Breast Cancer Likely Common
Breast surgeon, Lisa Bailey, has surmised that phone-related breast cancer may be common. Doctors don’t generally think about cell phone radiation being a cause. “There’s no evidence [that cell phone radiation causes breast cancer], but that’s because we haven’t studied it.”
She added that she would never wear a cell phone immediately next her body and would advise all women not to do that.
Surgeon John West concurs and stated that men are also getting breast cancer by putting phones in shirt pockets.
Even Cell Phone Manuals Give a Warning
Even though the wireless industry continues to claim that cell phones are safe to use and carry, if we look closely at the fine print in cell phone manuals, we’ll see that most of them warn us to keep the phone at least 5/8” away from the body.
Independent researchers state that the 5/8” distance the industry indicates is a gross under-estimation of the safety standard that should be warned about; but it’s telling that even cell phone manuals make an indication that there may be danger in cell phone use.
Other Radiation-Breast Cancer Links
Breast cancer hasn’t only been linked to cell phone radiation through the cases in which women have worn their cell phones in their bras. There is another more prevalent link that’s been made between radiation and breast cancer.
This connection involves radiation from any kind of wireless device (and even simply from electricity and appliances) and breast cancer. There are studies showing that radiation prevents the production of melatonin in the body, an essential hormone that, among other things, plays a major role in preventing breast cancer. Read more on the breast cancer – radiation link.
Get EMF Protection
Even though it’s obviously not smart to wear your cell phone in your bra, no matter what—you can feel more confident in having a cell phone anywhere near your body if you get cell phone radiation protection for your phone.
Be careful, however, not to rely on any product on the market claiming to protect you from cell phone radiation. Most have not been researched and tested and are not clear in describing what their technology is. Check out EarthCalm, a company that’s been around for 25 years and has some impressive research.
You’d think that people in the cell phone industry would believe the research out there (much of which they themselves have funded) that concludes that cell phones are completely safe to use.
Not so for Didier Bellens, head of Belgacom, the largest telecommunications company in Belgium. Not only does he insist upon using a land line for calls in his offices on the 27th floor of his company’s skyscraper; he also chooses to go without WiFi.
Refreshing Honesty about Cell Phone Radiation
And this isn’t a secret. In fact, Mr. Bellens is quite vocal about it. He has no qualms about educating people about the health effects of cell phone radiation and WiFi, especially when he’s with children and teens. At a recent talk he gave to schoolchildren, he stated:
“During the day, it is better to use a headset because the GSM [Global System for Mobile Communications], it heats. The waves are dangerous. At night, it is better to shut it off. If you use your phone as an alarm clock, you should also turn it off…”
In an explanation of Bellens’ intriguing position on cell phone use, a spokesperson explained that Bellens is only indicating the precautionary principles recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2011, which classified radiation from devices like cell phones and WiFi as a “possible human carcinogen” (Class2B).
Newest Report on Research
Perhaps Bellens is relying on more than the WHO report in his decisions about the danger of WiFi and cell phone radiation. There has been a whole lot more research done by industry-independent teams since that report came out. See a comprehensive report detailing this research to date.
An earlier version of the report was published in 2007; its conclusions were hair-raising enough. But this up-dated report, authored by 29 international scientists from 10 different countries world-wide, includes over 1800 new studies done on health effects caused by man-made electromagnetic fields—and it is downright scary.
In an Ideal World
What if more presidents of telecommunications companies were to follow Bellens’ lead in simply being honest about the dangers of cell phone radiation? The millions of people blithely using their cell phones on a daily basis might take pause in what they’re doing and pay attention to the independent research that’s been done on the dangers. They might think twice about what they’re subjecting themselves to.
It’s Not Necessary to Give up your Cell Phone & WiFi
What Bellens is perhaps not caught up with is the fact is that, despite all the evidence of risk, it’s possible to continue to use your cell phone and WiFi without worry—if you simply get EMF protection.
In 2007, a large group of international scientists published a comprehensive report entitled the BioInitiative Report, citing numerous scientific studies that had been conducted showing the health dangers of electromagnetic radiation exposure. Now an updated version of the BioInitiative Report has been published.
Consisting of 29 independent scientists and health experts from 10 different countries, the BioInitiative Working Group 2012 assessed over 1800 new scientific studies involving power lines, cell and cordless phones, cell towers, smart meters WiFi, laptops, routers, baby monitors and electrical wiring and appliances.
They concluded that evidence for electromagnetic radiation danger has substantially increased since 2007, and that we have far more evidence than necessary to require us to immediately take more precautionary action to protect ourselves and our children.
Of special concern is the fact that the level of daily electromagnetic exposure has become more intensive than ever. There is much greater involuntary exposure now, and it is nearly unavoidable—even for those who choose not to go wireless. Cell phone users, parents-to-be, young children and pregnant women are at particular risk.
Health Issues Linked to Electromagnetic Exposure
There is more evidence in this updated report that electromagnetic radiation damages DNA, interferes with DNA repair, and creates greater toxicity in the genes. It also cites studies showing pathological leakage of the blood-brain barrier and altered immune function. Effects on memory and sleep disruptions (especially around WiFi and cell towers) are further noted.
There are also a dozen new studies linking cell phones on standby carried on a belt or in a pocket of men and wireless laptops to sperm damage: quality, motility & death, all affecting fertility and reproduction.
Perhaps even more alarming is the evidence of increased incidence of child & adult brain tumor risks, especially glioma (a malignant brain tumor), that is linked to electromagnetic radiation. Also increased is the incidence of acoustic neuroma with the use of mobile & cordless phones. EMF exposure has been further correlated with other cancers, such as child and adult leukemia and breast cancer in both men and women.
The report also cites studies showing a link between electromagnetic radiation and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s & ALS, miscarriage and a number of cardiovascular effects.
Children and EMFs
The report indicates that EMFs can plausibly increase autism risk and symptoms. Co-author Martha Herbert, MD states:
“While we aggressively investigate the links between autism disorders and wireless technologies, we should minimize wireless and EMF exposures for people with autism disorders, children of all ages, people planning a baby, and during pregnancy.”
Studies have further found that wireless devices such as phones and laptops used by pregnant women may alter the brain development of the fetus. The correlation between wireless technology and the conditions of hyperactivity, learning difficulties, and behavior problems has been seen in both animal and human studies.
The authors of the new BioInitiative Report believe that with this new evidence, new safety standards are now urgently needed for protection against electromagnetic radiation dangers. One co-author, Lennart Hardell MD at Orebro University, Sweden, states:
“Epidemiological evidence shows that radiofrequency should be classified as a human carcinogen. The existing FCC/IEE and ICNIRP public safety limits and reference levels are not adequate to protect public health.”
