In an ironic twist, one of the well-known names in Canadian technology has spoken out on a highly controversial topic: the dangers of WiFi in schools.
Frank Clegg, who was employed at Microsoft for 15 years and served as president of Microsoft Canada from 2000 to 2005, is making it clear he is opposed to wireless internet in schools.
To get his message across, Clegg has launched Citizens 4 Safe Technology (C4ST). He now speaks to parents and teachers about WiFi radiation dangers in schools.
Children are Getting Sick
Clegg states that although WiFi in schools could have a number of potential benefits, the downsides are just as real—and don’t get nearly the same amount of attention. An increasing number of children are getting sick from exposure to WiFi technology present in a growing number of school buildings.
According to Clegg, the illnesses reported by students are not an invention of their parents’ imaginations, as some opponents claim. Doctors and even teachers are increasingly asserting that wireless networks can cause real-life physical harm.
“There are already children who can’t go to school because of headaches, nausea and heart problems from the wireless systems. Some of these kids have a doctor’s note to prove it. This is a real hazard and we shouldn’t wait for the government to catch up to the technology. We should exercise caution, especially with children.”
A Similar Story
Not long ago, the head of Belgium’s largest telecommunications company, Didier Bellens, began speaking out in a similar way against the dangers of RF radiation from both cells phones and WiFi—especially for children. Bellens insists upon personally using a land line for calls in his offices on the 27th floor of his company’s skyscraper. He also chooses to go without WiFi.
Both Bellens and Clegg seem to know something that most people don’t—or aren’t wanting to know about. But when you hear WiFi warnings from within the telecom industry, it can really make you wake up and wonder. Parents, in particular, are showing concern and raising protests in many different school systems.
Increasing Numbers of Professionals Warning School Officials
Although the information about the dangers of WiFi in schools has been slow to catch on in the US and Canada, an increasing number of governments and authorities in other parts of the world have banned or warned against the use of the use of wireless internet in schools. Many experts, scientists and doctors are warning schools to take a precautionary approach.
A number of organizations, as well, including the Council of Europe, the European Environment Agency, UK Trades Union Congress, the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety, and the Russian Commission for Electromagnetic Safety, have also given strong warnings about all technology that emits radiation similar to that of WiFi.
One Doctor’s Campaign against WiFi in Schools
One of the most outspoken and well-known experts concerning the issue of WiFi in schools is Dr. Magda Havas, Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies, Trent University, ON, Canada. She currently spends a great deal of of her time speaking to groups, committees and officials all across Canada and the US.
“The scientific evidence clearly shows that microwave radiation at levels well below [international] guidelines and at levels now commonly found inside classrooms with Wi-Fi routers causes cancer in laboratory animals, causes heart palpitations in sensitive adults, causes reduced sperm motility and viability, and is associated with symptoms of electrosensitivity that include – but are not limited to – cognitive dysfunction, pain, fatigue, mood disorders (depression, anxiety, irritability), dizziness, nausea, weakness, skin problems, and tinnitus.”
Duration of exposure to WiFi radiation, Havas notes, is “absolutely critical.” Prolonged exposure could increase people’s chances of getting cancer. With children in school for an average of six hours a day, five days a week for 40 weeks a year, they are exposed to 1,200 hours of WiFi radiation in a single school year.
She adds: “History is simply repeating itself with microwave radiation just as it did with cigarette smoking, asbestos, lead and DDT.”
A Telling Experiment with WiFi Radiation
Five ninth-graders in Denmark recently created a simple science experiment that may be causing a stir in the scientific community.
The students placed six trays filled with Lepidium sativum, a type of garden cress in a room without a router or any other wireless devices, and six trays of the seeds in another room next to two wireless routers.
Over the next 12 days, the girls watered the seeds in both rooms equally, as they observed, measured, weighed and photographed their results.
By the end of the experiment the results were blatantly obvious—the cress seeds placed near the routers had not grown–many of them had simply died—while the cress seeds planted in the other room away from the routers, thrived.
According to Kim Horsevad, a teacher at Hjallerup Skole in Denmark where the cress experiment took place, a neuroscience professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden is interested in repeating the experiment in controlled professional scientific environments.
What are the Symptoms of WiFi Radiation Exposure?
The symptoms of exposure to WiFi range across the board, depending on the person. However, some of the most common ones include:
Correlations have also been made to ADHD, Autism & Asthma.
Children’s Vulnerability to WiFi Radiation
It’s important to understand that children are especially vulnerable to WiFi radiation because their nervous systems and brains are still developing. Also their skulls are thinner and smaller, so the radiation penetrates more deeply into their brains.
What to do about Your Child’s Health at School?
If you have the energy and passion, you can engage in protests in your children’s schools, writing letters to the school board and bringing in experts to speak to parents and school officials.
This activist work is important; but it can take a while to produce results. Meanwhile, you can at least protect your own children from WiFi by giving them EMF protection pendants to wear. Read about EarthCalm’s solution to the dangers of WiFi in schools.
